Mission statement:
To Preserve the roots and identity of our Brazilian Culture through Samba Music, Dance and Arts.

About us:
Casa do Samba means where samba lives. Brazil is known as "a casa do samba ", the home of samba. Samba is the most popular of Brazilian music styles, getting it's recognition by being the music of the world famous Carnaval. Here in California, Casa do Samba promises to keep the amazing energy of Samba alive in the hearts of Samba lovers and Brasileiros away from home.  Even though launched in October 2007 the founders and musicians are well known as the pioneers in the Samba world having performed for years at the first Samba school of Los Angeles, MILA Samba School, which was founded almost two decades ago. In 2008 Casa do Samba was chosen to bring Carnaval Rio de Janeiro Style to Los Angeles by performing at the 2008 annual Brazilian Carnaval at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. There are various Samba Schools in Rio de Janeiro, and throughout the course of the year each school rehearses in preparation for the holiday celebration known as Carnaval. The preparations and rehearsals for the 2009 Carnaval have already begun, and with such a dedicated and talented team of people working together the performance looks very promising. The 2008 Carnaval was said to have been one of the best in History and we are aiming for an even better performance in 2009. Our goal is to offer Music and Art education through Samba dance and percussion workshops and well as " artesanato", Brazilian Arts and Crafts. Included in our future plans are also a soccer academy and the launching on a MPB, popular Brazilian music style band this summer. In doing so, we hope to join the efforts to unite the Brazilian community, but most importantly to keep the culture alive for the generations to come. Casa do Samba hopes to support Brazilian parents teach their children of our history and Arts, because we believe that if we don't preserve our memories and our traditions we will loose our identity. We are also very dedicated to promoting diversity and integration of Brazilian Culture in the United States by exposing and welcoming everyone to become part of our programs and Samba School.

CARIOCA DA GEMA

I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Bairro do Catete. Being native to Brazilian culture, music lives within my blood. At age 8 my first introduction to playing music was an acoustic guitar and bass. My single mother was a pivotal role in contributing to the practice and playing of music.

At age 11 I was given the opportunity to play samba with Banda da Gloria and Banda Sao Salvador. This was the turning point in learning all percussion instruments. I played every year during the time of Carnival until I was 18.

At age 15 I expanded my music genre to rock and pop music. I played with a band named Son Nosso, for five years. Our talent landed an opportunity to play at the famous Circo Voador, which is an auditorium of 1,500 seats.

I arrived in U.S. the year of 1986, and 22 years later I now have an after school program. My program teaches at-risk students creative alternatives to drug use and gang involvement through Brazilian music. The major goal is to build self-pride and pride within each pupil by meeting to two basic needs of an individual: to love and be loved and to feel worthwhile to themselves and to others. Enhance awareness of Latin America and African Diaspora. I have found my bliss serving and teaching these children. My motto is “Take care of the children today, for they will be the leaders of tomorrow”.

Marisa's background history: I was born in Parana, but I was raised in São Paulo. I’m a typical Brazilian girl with a love for music and of course dance. I adore Samba dancing. Since I was little I was already shaking it to the Samba rhythm. I really never imagined that one day I would be dancing in a Samba dance show. It all started as a one-show-only performance for my friends and I ended up liking it so much! I feel like I’m representing my country of Brazil putting on my bikini costume, and I am so proud of Brazil. In addition to Samba, I also like very much Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Reggeton. I am currently part of Dania’s Oya Brazil Samba Show.
